Earthly and Heavenly Fathers

Good Good Father

Sometimes God speaks to you in a whisper and sometimes he has to yell at you. I feel that both of my fathers, heavenly and earthly have spent their lives raising their voice to get my attention. Twice this week, actually two days in a row I was asked questions that centered around my heavenly and earthly father. Ok, I get it maybe I need to look into this a little further. Then today Good Good Father by Chris Tomlin came on my Alexa playlist. The song moves me most days but today it moved me to tears as I looked at the song as not only speaking about my heavenly father but also my earthly father.

Good Good Father by Chris Tomlin

You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways to us

Oh, it’s love so undeniable
I, I can hardly speak
Peace so unexplainable
I, I can hardly think
As you call me deeper still
As you call me deeper still
As you call me deeper still
Into love, love, love

You’re a good good father
It’s who you are, it’s who you are, it’s who you are
And I’m loved by you
It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am

Earthly Father

I was blessed with an amazing earthly father, and two grandfathers, who were men of God and showed me the path that would lead to God. My father is there for me in the good times and the bad times, and we have had both. My father made sure I went to church every Sunday, he made sure I knew who Jesus and God were, and he made sure I had a good foundation for my life.

My dad’s love for me is undeniable, it is unconditional, it is never-ending. My dad would go to the ends of the earth for me and I am blessed to know that and have him in my life. There are many in this world who don’t know their earthly father, either they have never met him or was abanded by him or fell out of touch with him. I find this heartbreaking, I love my earthly father and would probably be lost without his presence in my life.

My earthly father, Ron, is a good good father, it is who he is and I am loved by him, that is who I am.

Heavenly Father

Do you think there is a correlation between our experiences with our earthly father and how we perceive our Heavenly Father?

When you hear the word “father,” do you think of someone who is loving…or angry? Someone who is pleased with you…or constantly disappointed? Someone who is always available…or someone who is too busy, preoccupied, or distant?

Regardless of the type of father, you grew up with—or without—it is likely that your view of God is influenced by the relationship you had with your father.

Studies have proved that people’s perceptions of their earthly father is how they perceive God. There’s a lot of confusion, anger and maybe even turning away from God because of what’s been modeled by their earthly father. People who don’t have an example of a loving father growing up, have a hard time believing that there’s a loving, heavenly father who would have that kind of unconditional love for them, because hey had never experienced it themselves.

God is a father who is:
• always there
• up close and personal
• fully pleased
• in complete control
• completely safe

Love Is the Greatest

God tells us about his love in the following verse, do you see that God loves you?

1 Corinthians 13
If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; Some manuscripts read sacrificed my body to be burned. but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing. Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages Or in tongues. and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever! Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! But when the time of perfection comes, these partial things will become useless. When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. Greek see face to face. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely. Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.
These verses are the most eloquent and profound words ever written on the subject of love. To comment on its parts is a bit like giving a botany lecture on a beautiful flower–if you’re not careful you lose the beauty and impact of it. But we can profit from understanding the parts and applying it to family relationships.
Love is greater than all spiritual gifts because, without love, gifts are empty. God shows us the practice of love, how love is greater than all spiritual gifts because of its selfless characteristics. Selfless love is the priority for every Christian. Love is greater than all spiritual gifts because it outlasts them.
